Founded in the winter of 2015 in Oshkosh, Wi, post-stoner outfit Baba Yaga began after a chance drunken encounter between Taylor (guitar & vocals) and Steve (bass) at the local country saloon. After chatting about The Mars Volta and how Black Sabbath was really just a heavy blues band for the first few records, the two decided they should make music. Taylor invited Steve over to jam with him and his roommate, Scott (drums). The three quickly blended their nebulous influences--everything from Rush to Angel Olsen--into a unique approach to stoner-rock.
Their first release, “Reptoid EP”, is a concept album which takes place on Baba Yaga, here the name of alien desert planet. It follows the path of a nameless protagonist who has crashed landed on Baba Yaga in pursuit of his lost love, the Sorceress. Over the course of the album, the protagonist phases in and out of his haze as he searches for the Sorceress, who has been held captive by desert’s reptilian pharoah, Asiri. As the drama unfolds, the protagonist comes to the stark realization that he’s been trapped in a time-loop on Baba Yaga, living out the same endless search for millennia, doomed by the Sorceress’s curse, to eternally become the reptilian overlord of the desert planet.
While fantastic in plot, “Reptoid EP” explores the darker, self-destructive side of “stoner” culture and marijuana dependency. Far from being diatribe against marijuana use and stoner culture,
“Reptoid EP” explores the cycles of abuse, self-absorption, and the crumbling relationships which often result from living in a self-induced haze.
