sloburn 05:30
Left my head underground, Slowburned my eyes away. Blackened breath, Fills my lungs, Mouthless hole, Filled with stars. Dreaming of a future escape, I swallowed your tears. Now hope fills me with sand, As I call out your name. When the winds come, I’ll cry, I will pray for rain. I hear the voice, of the gods, Telling me, “become the sun.” So I burn myself alive… So I burn myself alive…

skeptik 04:40
All dressed up in spaceship white, I found you deep inside Your midnight garden, Holding a rare new flower I want to believe, There’s nothing inside, I want to believe, In your holy tonight. All dressed up in lizard green, I clawed my way inside Your midnight labyrinth, To eat your strange new fruit Open up your magnet arms, Swallow me whole. Open up your blackhole mouth, Swallow me whole. I want to believe, There’s nothing inside, I want to believe In your holy tonight.

asiri 04:52
Underneath a thousand feet of gold, Awakens the ancient pharoah, Hungry for his ancient throne Stolen by the sky long ago. Rise! Asiri! Rise! Steal the heavens from the sky! Rise! Asiri! Rise! Steal the heavens from the sky! Lashing out against the night, Whispering forgotten codes, Awakens the ancient pharoah To reign on his scorched earth all alone. Rise! Asiri! Rise! Steal the heavens from the sky! Rise! Asiri! Rise! Steal the heavens from the sky!

glyph 06:24
Somewhere underground, A thousand voices stirring, Under the ground... Waiting for your distant memory, Drowning in your wake. Where will love be found? Spoiled eggs are hatching Under the sound….oh no... Knee deep in your sweet distortion, Drown me in your wake…. What have I become? Creature? Reptoid?
6.
griever 03:53
I hear your swollen voice fading, Aether wrought with the stars, falling… Sorceress! Matron in white, Guarded by fire, lost inside... Matron, guardian in white, Grieving the loss of your mind. Matron, lost somewhere in time, Grieving the loss of my mind. I hear your swollen voice fading, Aether wrought with the stars, falling…

reptoid 05:02
Slow down, halo The sun cut my eyes Cold drift, lost time A cavern of teeth God's stapled to dragon wings All teeth, no tail Changing face, melting face Slowly starts to fade Unholy snake cleric Stomps a strange earth Build his pyramids Bond them to gold Reptoid, Lizard King Where’s your crown? Reptoid, Lizard King, Where’s your crown? Your crown? Your crown?

about

"The Oshkosh, WI post-stoner trio Baba Yaga came out howling, moaning, gnashing and burning with their first polished album this June, titled Reptoid: a work of cosmic, sublime terror with a hook. Note: It’s not a gimmick, but a hook that tethers the listener, the lyrics, and the music. It’s a heavy listen with an equally weighted concept that—to the delight of anyone bored with concept albums of late—lacks the pretentious attitude often associated with any act using “post” or “prog” as a descriptor with its genre.

Reptoid’s theme is a clever twist on the pitfalls of stoner culture and dependency on altered consciousness, following the story of an interstellar traveler marooned on a desert planet, existing in a grief-induced haze while he searches for his long-lost lover, “Sorceress.” The traveler realizes that he’s been cursed by Sorceress to wander the desert planet alone in a time loop for the rest of eternity, without success or hope. That’s the devastating and captivating story, and the moody lyrics cooperate playfully with the sonic tone.

The general sound of Reptoid is a prehistoric stomp through a meteor-scorched desert where Scott’s drums plod and groove with Steve’s sinister, Undertow-era Tool bass lines while Taylor’s cosmic riffs swirl and drone with distortion and reverb. It’s full of surprises, too; lead vocalist Taylor’s vocals run the gamut of hideous snarls, anguished yowls, and brooding moans. The instrumentals sometimes drown him out at key moments where the haze overtakes the traveler: the sixth track, “Griever,” opens with a mighty howling roar of Sorceress’s name that eventually fades back into the haze of the instruments. The most sonically dynamic song, “Glyph,” includes numerous time and tempo shifts with a sudden technicolor guitar solo during its final two-minute dénouement; we’re not talking soaring Sabbath licks or technical Malmsteen taps, but a burst of clarity and complexity that triggers the “Griever.”

It’s hard to lose interest in Baba Yaga’s fluid and complex sound, more vibrant than most post-stoner albums. However, the most exciting part of this debut EP is its promise for a band in its youth; these dudes are just climbing out of their primordial soup, and Reptoid is one mighty roar. "
